If your face has dry areas along with some oily patches, you are likely to have combination skin. It can be tricky to look after your skin, as you might need to look for different products for the dry and oily parts of your face. However, there is no need to worry as there are various products that are formulated for combination skin.
Combination skin is a result of genetic factors. However, sometimes as we grow older our skin can become drier and oilier due to hormonal changes.
Here are a few steps you can follow to manage combination skin –
Cleanser:
Your skin can get covered in dirt, dust, excess oil, and other impurities throughout the day. Hence, it is essential to clean your face at least twice a day to avoid clogged pores, which lead to acne breakouts.
Select a clear, fragrance-free, gentle, gel-based, or foaming cleanser that has mild exfoliants like AHAs, or BHAs. It should be water-soluble and not leave your skin feeling dry or tight. Micellar water is an ideal choice for this face type.
An ideal formulation thoroughly cleans the skin, hydrates it without stripping the skin of its natural moisture, protects the skin’s lipid barrier, locks in natural moisture, and cleanses the surface sebum.
Toner:
A good toner helps minimize pores, firms skin and reduces penetration of environmental pollutants in the skin. It also gently moisturizes the skin. Skin toner is also known as a skin freshener, astringent, and clarifier.
Avoid toners that contain alcohol and synthetic fragrances as they might irritate the skin. Ingredients like salicylic acid, lactic acid, and witch hazel are known to be particularly helpful for combination skin. Additionally, some citrus oils like orange, lemon, and lime can also be beneficial.
Moisturizer:
A well-moisturized skin is the secret to a healthy and natural glow. It acts as a natural barrier between your skin and the environment and protects it from damage. Select a moisturizer that is sheer and lightweight. A gel or water-based moisturizer would be ideal as it will not feel too greasy or light for your skin.
Your T-zone might be prone to acne; thus it is essential to select an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, ceramides, and squalane can help keep skin balanced hydrated, and moisturized.
Sunscreen:
Applying sunscreen is one of the best and easiest ways to protect skin health and appearance at any age. Regular application of sunscreen helps prevent sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. Select a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or above.
People with combination skin need to use a gel-based sunscreen that needs to be water-resistant. People with combination skin should not use sunscreen with antioxidants.
Weekly skincare routine
Exfoliation:
Exfoliating face scrubs are essential as even regular cleansing builds up layers of dead skin cells can build up on the surface making your face feel rough and dull. Exfoliating smoothens out skin, unclogs pores, and makes it brighter.
If you are using a manual exfoliant, ensure that you do not scrub your skin very harshly as it can lead to irritation. This irritation is responsible for acne breakouts.
Face mask:
A purifying face mask helps loosen and minimize the appearance of your pores. It also helps unclog pores, which helps in lesser acne breakouts. A clay mask would be beneficial for people with combination skin as it will help absorb excess oil and clear out pores without drying out your skin.
Skincare requires patience. Being consistent and regular in your routine will give you the skin of your dreams. Ensure that you do not introduce too many products in your skincare routine at once as you might not understand which ingredients/ products are beneficial for your skin. A skincare routine should be simple and doable. You can add or skip steps to your routine according to your skincare concerns.
