Dark circles significantly reduce the radiance of your face and make you look tired. It is one of the most common skin concerns for people of all age groups and genders. They are caused due to allergies, sun exposure, genetic reasons, age, hyperpigmentation, lack of sleep, reduced fatty tissue around the eyes, thinning of the skin under the eyes, consuming salty foods, smoking, dehydration, frequent rubbing of the eyes, thyroid and some other conditions.

Dark circles are mainly of three types – brown, black, and blue. To determine the type of your dark circles, gently stretch the skin under your eyes between your thumb and index finger. If the dark skin moves along with the skin then you have brown dark circles, if the skin appears lighter when you stretch the skin then you have black dark circles. Additionally, when you stretch the skin under the eyes and it does not move, you have blue circles.

Brown dark circles

They are caused by allergies, hyperpigmentation, overexposure to the sun, frequent rubbing of the eyes, dermatitis, hormonal changes, inflammation, or genetic disposition. If your dark circles are caused due to allergies then it is essential to treat the allergies to get rid of dark circles. Avoid rubbing your eye. If itching or irritation occurs, apply a cooling towel to manage it. Ensure that you remove all eye makeup before sleeping. Protect the area from sun exposure with SPF.

If you have brown dark circles, it might be the result of aging. Invest in anti-aging products and consume healthy food. It is essential to wear sunscreen every day to further prevent the damage caused by the sun.

Blue dark circles

They are a primary cause of lifestyle factors. Ensure that you sleep well for around 7-8 hours, consume healthy food, drink plenty of water, gently massage the affected area, or apply a warm compress on the affected area.

Black dark circles

They are caused due to lack of collagen and elastin, accumulation of fatty tissues under the eyes, or genetically deep tears at a deeper level in the skin. They are caused by restricted blood circulation, stress, smoking, lack of sleep, iron deficiency, dehydration, thinning of the under-eye skin, alcohol consumption, diseases like anemia, liver or kidney disorders, or prolonged use of electronic devices.

Here are some home remedies that help in getting rid of dark circles at home –

Potato face pack

Potatoes are rich in vitamin C, B1, B3, and B6 along with several minerals that give brighter, clear, and glowing skin. It helps reduce acne, blemishes, inflammation, puffy eyes, and dark spots. Additionally, it also prevents sun damage and pollution.

For lightening dark circles, mix 3 tablespoons with 2 tablespoons of honey. Apply this mask to the affected area and keep it on for 15 minutes. Wash it off with cool water. Use this mask regularly for visible results.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are brightening agents that help get rid of dark circles and make skin soft and supple. They are rich in sulfur, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin B, and vitamin C. it helps tighten pores and acts as a natural astringent that keeps away dirt and oil.

Mix one teaspoon of tomato juice with aloe vera gel and apply this paste to your dark circles. Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse it with cold water. Use tomatoes 1-2 times a week for desired results.

Teabags

Green tea, when applied topically, helps fade dark spots and blemishes and clear complexion. It also helps reduce inflammation and gives radiant skin.

Soak a green tea bag in water and then chill it by keeping it in a refrigerator for some time. Place these cool tea bags over your eyes. Use this remedy every day for visible results

Almond oil

Almond oil is enriched with vitamin E, which helps the skin to be soft, supple, and brighter. It helps reduce puffiness, improves complexion, treats acne, reverses signs of aging, and helps reduce scars.

Take a few drops of almond oil and massage it gently around the eyes for a couple of minutes. Keep it overnight and wash it in the morning. Ensure that you only use the almond oil that is meant to be used on the face.

Cucumber

Cucumber calms, and hydrates the skin. It promotes the development of antioxidants, reduces sunburn and blemishes, and gives radiant skin.

Cut and store cucumber slices in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, place it on your eyes for 10 minutes. You will see an immediate difference in your eyes and notice that your eyes have freshened up.

Milk

Milk is a great source of vitamin A, i.e. retinoids, which are essential for keeping skin young, bright, and healthy.

To reap the benefits of milk, soak a cotton ball or makeup remover pad in a bowl of cold milk for some time. Use this pad to apply milk under your eyes and keep it for 10 minutes. Rinse it with warm water. For best results, use it regularly.

Some tips for getting rid of dark circles –

  • Reduce consumption of salt
  • Consume foods rich in omega 3, flavonol
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Limit sun exposure and always wear sunscreen
  • Keep your head elevated with the help of pillows while sleeping
