Enokii Blog - Benefits of Niacinamide

Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide is a water-soluble, topical form of vitamin B3 (niacin). It is an antioxidant that aids skin brightening, prevents signs of aging, and controls acne. It is responsible for the growth and regulation of cells in the body.

Evidently, studies show niacinamide penetrates deeply into the skin and easily absorbs it in the skin. It can be used at any time of the day, about 1-2 times, depending on the formulation and combination in which it is used. Generally, serums are the most potent and have the highest concentration of actives.

The benefits of niacinamide are as follows –

Niacinamide gives clear complexion

People with oily and acne-prone skin benefit the most from niacinamide as it helps clear pores by balancing out the oil production on the skin. Excess oil production is one of the major reasons for clogged pores. The anti-inflammatory properties of niacinamide help soothe the redness and pimples faster and more efficiently.

Gives an even skin tone

Melanin, a skin pigment is responsible for uneven skin tone and skin discoloration. It can fade dark spots, pigmentation, and sun spots. Research shows that it is an important skin-lightening agent that prevents discolorations. It also helps reduce the existing discolorations and gives an even skin tone.

Soothes irritation

Niacinamide exhibits potent anti-inflammatory properties. These properties help alleviate redness and inflammation on the skin. It is especially effective in skin conditions like acne and eczema. It works by helping the skin build proteins and retain moisture to prevent the damaging effects of environmental stressors.

Fortifies the protective layer of the skin

When ceramides are damaged with age, the skin becomes vulnerable to all types of issues like persistent dry and flaky skin and extra-sensitive skin. It boosts the production of ceramides and elastin, the essential components for building the skin barrier. Thus, niacinamide strengthens the skin’s natural protective shield. This gives healthy and hydrated skin, which can defend itself better from environmental pollutants.

Moisturizes the skin

Niacinamide aids in the building of keratin, a protein that keeps the skin firm and healthy. Additionally, it also helps in building a ceramides barrier that helps in retaining the moisture on the skin. When niacinamide is used with a topical moisturizer, it boosts the hydrating abilities of the moisturizer. Niacinamide does wonders for the skin when paired with glycerin, retinol, peptides, vitamin C and any other antioxidants.

Minimizes pores

Niacinamide has a normalizing impact on the lining of the pores, which plays a crucial role in keeping dirt and oil from clogging into the skin. Sun damage is yet another factor that makes the pores appear stretched. Some research indicates that a high level of niacinamide can tighten the pores by boosting the production of the skin’s supportive elements.

Protects against free radical damage

Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause skin damage. Moreover, UV rays, air pollution, alcohol consumption, smoking, poor nutrition, and pesticides are some of the common causes of free radical damage. Whereas, niacinamide promotes the growth of healthy skin cells and protects them from further damage.

Some niacinamide products start showing initial benefits in the first couple of weeks of use. It starts showing results after 2-4 weeks of continuous use, depending on the severity of your skin condition and the concentration of the product. Niacinamide can be combined with other potent ingredients like peptides, hyaluronic acid, retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, and all types of antioxidants.
